Twitter versus Literature, and the Role of Literature in Modern Society
In a world where many communicate with a Tweet or with a picture on Instagram, what is the role of literature? Are the novel, the poem, and the short story doomed to extinction? Are these new technologies up to the task of shining a spotlight on social conditions? Will Twitter do for the world what George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm did for our understanding of politics and government?
Winston Churchill said “Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities because it has been said, it is the quality which guarantees all others”. In this interactive seminar Professor John Bredin surveys the works of courageous authors whose books have fostered social change and explores the role of literature in modern society.
Seminar leader John Bredin is a progressive educator, author, and host of the weekly TV show “Public Voice Salon”.
