In this episode of Smart Talk, Ed speaks with Alanna Hartzok, co-founder and co-director of Earth Rights Institute on how to fund the Green New Deal, America’s radical plan to decarbonize its economy and address climate change. Despite having very ambitious goals, the conversation highlights potential flaws of the Deal and most notably, its failure to consider land value tax or land value capture as part of its funding mix. According to Alanna, a Green New Deal that works for all would require a fundamental macroeconomic restructuring away from the dominant neoliberal model, and towards a more inclusive framework that socializes publicly created wealth for the benefit of our communities.
