But are the solutions provided by Big Tech as good as they contend? What does the rise of Big Tech entail for wealth inequality, democracy and capitalism itself? Based on Yanis Varoufakis’ latest book – Technofeudalism, What Killed Capitalism, this course investigates the main challenges presented by Tech monopolies and discusses Georgist answers. Dr. Marty Rowland is an environmental engineer with New York City’s Parks Department. Dr. Rowland is a faculty member as well as trustee at the Henry George School. He has published extensively on Georgist Economics and taught many courses at the School. American Exceptionalism began with those who escaped Europe during the Thirty Years War because they were unwilling to fight for one orthodoxy, and its asserted Magisterium, against all competing orthodoxies. As a consequence of the first Americans simply leaving the quarrels of Europe behind, the American colonies developed a very different concept of polity than the post-Westphalian nation-states of Europe. The victory of the Union in the American Civil War led to a century when the Federal government attempted to remake the Union as a European, Bismarckian nation-state. In addition, the rise of Marxism as a transnational, supranational philosophy of government by moral principle has intruded into the American debate a moral authority putatively greater than that of the self-sovereign individual. We now find ourselves in a political stalemate between government by asserted moral principle and government by the self-interest of self-sovereign individuals. As a board member at Happonomy, Stef is dedicated to developing an economic system that enhances quality of life for all. His core work is focused on the Sustainable Money System (SuMSy), a groundbreaking monetary model that seeks to align financial mechanisms with human well-being and environmental sustainability. Stef’s commitment to this mission has led him to pursue a PhD at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), where he is continuing to research and refine the SuMSy model. His goal is to reshape monetary systems to foster sustainable and equitable economic practices. Stef’s research delves deeply into the influence of monetary systems on individual behavior and societal organization. Through his work, he advocates for transformative economic systems that challenge traditional financial paradigms and offer innovative solutions to create a fairer and more sustainable future.
