Georgist Perspectives
Using Henry George’s Philosophies to Solve Today’s Economic Issues
Abstract
This article examines the anti-democratic consequences of California’s Proposition 13, which capped property taxes in the Golden State at 1 percent market value. It also challenges the populist origin story of Proposition 13, showing instead the influence of money and political capital it its passage. Finally, this article suggests how to reform the property tax system in California along more Georgist lines.
