Social Capital meets Social Media
Seminar

Who do you know? Your connections form part of your social capital; the network, shared values, and mutual understandings that encourage trust, facilitate trade, and make cooperation easier. Henry George noted that trust was a pre-condition to trade. Nobel Prize winning economist Elinor Ostrom regarded social capital, along with physical, human, and natural capital, as essential for growth and development.

In this seminar we review the concept of social capital, study its operation in our world, and consider its expression in various forms of social media.

Prosperity through Cooperation – Germany’s Economic Miracle – Overview
Seminar

Our economic system often features opposing interests; workers who want more pay, capitalists who want more interest, shareholders who want more profits, and landowners who want more rent. In Germany, businesses adopt a different mindset; emphasizing the long term, placing great value on relationships with employees, customers, and suppliers, promoting innovation, and committing to the wider community.

In this seminar, Michael Bucher compares and contrasts the “Mittelstand Mindset” with more traditional forms of capitalism. Michael also examines the advantages enjoyed by German businesses, such as access to low-cost finance and government support.

Michael Bucher is currently a freelance researcher/writer for Shanghai Business Review, writing on topics in business, trade, and international relations relating to China.

In this seminar, former US diplomat and investment banker Edward Harrison will spotlight a neglected wellspring of the populist grievances sweeping the United States and Europe — crony capitalism masquerading as a traditional free market.

CONNECTIONS AND COOPERATION CREATE WEALTH – FROM HENRY GEORGE TO JANE JACOBS
Seminar

A keen observer, Henry George noted the importance of cooperation in generating wealth, yet also recognized that competition was essential to civilization. Another astute observer, Jane Jacobs, stated “Whenever and wherever societies have flourished and prospered rather than stagnated and decayed, creative and workable cities have been at the core of the phenomenon. Decaying cities, declining economies, and mounting social troubles travel together. The combination is not coincidental.”

Tonight we examine George’s work on cooperation and competition, and consider the role of these forces in Jacob’s ideas on cities as engines of growth and development.

In tonight’s seminar Tom Ballou evaluates the presidency of Warren G. Harding and develops a template for grading presidents, past, present, and future.
