This course explores the intertwined histories of Indigenous nations, land use, and legal rights in North America. Through close engagement with primary sources, legal cases, and recent scholarship, participants will examine Indigenous land stewardship, colonial property regimes, U.S. federal Indian policy, and the legal strategies Native nations have employed to protect and reclaim their lands. The course concludes by exploring contemporary environmental, political, and cultural movements that shape Indigenous land futures in the 21^st century.

The instructor, Dr. Brian Hosmer, is the Head of the OSU History Department. Prior to joining OSU in the summer of 2020, he held the H.G. Barnard Chair in Western American History at the University of Tulsa, following academic positions at the University of Delaware, University of Wyoming, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Notably, he directed the Newberry Library’s prestigious D’Arcy McNickle Center for Native American and Indigenous Studies for six years.
