This talk will investigate the determinants and mechanisms of poverty perpetuation with a view to challenging mainstream academic discourse. We will review Henry George’s theory in an effort to understand why development in modern technology, social services, and education fails to alleviate poverty, and why the growing wealth of industrialized economies tends to stay concentrated in fewer hands. We will look into various growth models to understand the steady state of rich and poor economies, their technical issues, and policy implications, and lastly how the ecological imbalance and climate change impact poverty and vice versa. The talk will highlight Soddy’s relevance by discussing his pioneering contribution on ‘internalizing’ the cost of environmental degradation that is regularly ‘externalized’ in today’s model of Finance Capitalism. Joe Bongiovanni is, perhaps uniquely, a second-generation monetary reformer and the former Director of Vermont’s Kettle Pond Institute for Debt-Free Money. Please join us as we inaugurate our Great Debate series with an interactive conversation between James Cusick and Tom Rossman on artificial intelligence. Our debaters: James Cusick is an Independent IT Consultant specializing in Software Engineering and Cybersecurity. Previously James was Senior Director IT Strategy and Operations & Distinguished Engineer with Wolters Kluwer. Earlier James held leadership and technical roles at Dell, Bell Laboratories, and AT&T Labs. James is currently a Visiting Associate Researcher at Ritsumeikan University in Japan and a former Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University’s Department of Computer Science. James has served as a Board Trustee at the Henry George School of Social Science since 2020 where he researches topics in Innovation and Economics. James has published over 100 papers and articles and two recent books on IT. He is an IEEE Senior Member, an IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Contributor, and a recipient of the IEEE Japan Medal. Tom Rossman spent his career investigating how people around the world can think and interact more effectively. As a young executive in finance, he was an early champion of emerging markets, investing in newly emerging markets far ahead of the crowd. Following Communism’s collapse, Mr. Rossman took a key role in bringing American capital and investment to the developing markets of the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Turkey and North Africa. Mr. Rossman studied religion and history at Nyack College and did his master’s work in international relations at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. In our second session of Masters of Money, Randy Cook will introduce the work and legacy of Carl H. Wilken, an early proponent of “parity economics.” Wilken served as Research Analyst for the Raw Materials National Council, and is known for his work on developing an effective method to “regulate the value” of our money, and establishing an economic system based on Constitutional and humanitarian principles. Randy Cook has been President of the National Organization for Raw Materials (NORM) for 30 years. NORM has inherited and carries on the research of the Raw Materials National Council. He has operated a small farm for 50 years, written several years of monthly articles for AcresUSA, prepared legislation for Congress, made several presentations at the American Monetary Institute’s Annual Monetary Reform Conference, as well as speaking at the Eastern Economic Association, and here at the HGSSS.
