Today’s discussion comes from the “AI and Labor: Disruption, Disempowerment, or Empowerment?” panel of our 2025 Annual Conference and features Dr. Ansel Schiavone.
Dr. Schiavone is a heterodox economist whose work emphasizes the role of labor in creating value. Currently, he is a Professor at St. John’s University, where he researches macroeconomics, poverty & inequality, and political economy. He has held research positions at the Institute for New Economic Thinking and the International Labor Organization. His research has been published in numerous economics journals, such as Metroeconomica, Economic Modeling, and Review of Social Economy. Dr. Shiavone earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Denison University and his Ph.D. from the University of Utah.
Dr. Schiavone joined the Henry George School to discuss how AI will impact labor’s relationship with capital, the neoclassical definition of technology, and how AI could create more jobs, not take them away.
