Forest Privatization – Misdiagnosis of Commons Management
By Dr. Marty Rowland
INTRODUCTION
Hardin’s Tragedy of the Commons has infected the minds of millions to act against their self-interest. Elinor Ostrom’s Nobel Prize for a common pool resource management policy (Nobel 2009) that refutes Hardin’s thesis was to no avail. We now, therefore, suffer when policymakers suggest that problems such as deforestation, climate change, loss of ecological biodiversity, and the continuing pollution of our air, water, and land require a private property regime solution. This policy brief resolves this error by linking the ideas of Henry George with those of Ostrom.
