  • Growth and Anarchy; legacy of Raworth and George
    Session 5
    6:30 pm-8:30 pm
    2021.04.07
149 East 38th Street, New York, NY 10016

Growth and Anarchy; legacy of Raworth and George

Join us for a series of enlightening lectures and discussions on the ramifications of the degrowth hypothesis.

This five-class course explores the degrowth thesis of Kate Raworth’s Doughnut Economics -7 Ways to Think Like a 21st Century Economist (2017) and finds that Henry George actually supported a similar thesis, just 138 years earlier. The “Growth and Anarchy” title of the course is a play on George’s “Progress and Poverty” title. Anarchy is the likely outcome of pursuing growth (while accommodating its rent-seeking cousin) and failing to adopt a system of social development that has captured land values pay for those necessary services (that include breathable air, drinkable water, commonly-owned land, healthcare, security, transit, power, communications, and financial services) for the advantage of everyone.

    Dates: Mondays – 3/10, 3/17, 3/24, 3/31, 4/7
    Time: 6:30PM to 8:00PM EST

  • Making Money Work for People and Place – Gesell’s Natural Economic Order
    Seminar

MAKING MONEY WORK FOR PEOPLE AND PLACE – GESELL’S NATURAL ECONOMIC ORDER

    Wednesday April 28th, 6:30PM – 8:00PM

Money Talk is back at HGS with an exploration of the legacy of Silvio Gesell’s legacy.

Gesell’s monetary ideas were global in scale but when some of them were implemented at the local level in a small Austrian town, they created prosperity in the depths of the Great Depression. It was a phenomenon that inspired economists and communities around the world. What were those ideas and why were they banned and nearly expunged from history and consideration? What were their impacts and how can these ideas be re-discovered today to inspire the creation of prosperous communities and reverse the destruction of our global economy and ecosystem? Join us for an hour-long interactive webinar as monetary reformer, Howard Switzer explores the intellectual legacy of Silvio Gesell.

    ——

The speaker, Howard Switzer is a Tennessee architect and ecological design consultant on energy efficient, healthy homes of natural materials and on pre-industrial building methods. He is a founding member of the Nashville Peace and Justice Center and Moving the Money to Main Street Campaign.

Howard is also a trustee at the Illinois-based Alliance for Just Money, a non- profit and non-partisan organization that seeks to achieve real monetary reform.

A link to join the online seminar will be provided via email before the start of the webinar.
